Record Inflation Hits Laos Despite Economic Growth

Rising Costs Across Key Sectors Fuel Concerns Amidst Economic Expansion
Laos has experienced its highest inflation rate this year, reaching 26.2 percent in June, up from 25.8 percent in May, according to the Lao Statistics Bureau. This surge reflects escalating costs across various sectors, significantly impacting the overall cost of living.

The Consumer Price Index notably jumped from 229.28 in May to 234.54 in June. Healthcare and medicines led the price increases, soaring by 41.7 percent, followed closely by sectors like restaurants and hotels, and housing utilities, which include shelter, water, electricity, and cooking fuel.

Despite the stark inflation, Laos reported an economic upswing, with the GDP growing by 4.7 percent, slightly above the projected annual target of 4.5 percent. This growth is predominantly driven by sectors such as tourism, transportation, and retail, along with a notable expansion in agriculture and the construction and processing industries.

Contributing factors to the inflation include the depreciation of the Lao Kip against major currencies, which heightens the cost of imports. Additionally, an increase in the value-added tax from 7 percent to 10 percent has pushed commodity prices higher.

While the economic growth paints a positive outlook, challenges remain, particularly with the decline in per capita income when adjusted for inflation and foreign currency valuation, underscoring the complex economic landscape that Laos navigates amidst these inflationary pressures.
