Thailand and Laos are set to inaugurate a new railway network connecting Bangkok and Vientiane, according to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). A trial run for the project is scheduled for later this month, aiming to improve connectivity for travelers and goods between the two countries while bolstering the region’s logistics system with Thailand as a central hub.

SRT Deputy Governor Awirut Thongnet met with Daochinda Siharath, Managing Director of Lao National Railways, from Wednesday to Saturday to discuss the launch of the train service between Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station and Vientiane's Khamsavath, reported Ekkarat Sriarayanpong, head of the SRT governor's office, on Saturday.

The initiative aims to elevate regional logistics and provide significant economic benefits by facilitating the transport of goods and passengers between Thailand, Laos, and China. Discussions between Awirut and Siharath covered operational plans, tourism market development, advertising, and public relations strategies.

A trial run for the train services on the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station-Udon Thani-Nong Khai-Vientiane route is planned for June 13-14. A prior trial service between Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Thanalaeng, and Vientiane stations was successfully completed on May 21.

The SRT has also provided training to Lao railway staff in various areas such as train operations, station management, and ticket sales to ensure smooth operations. The extension of train services to Vientiane is expected to significantly boost economic activity and strengthen cross-border collaboration between the two nations.
