Lao-Cambodian Joint Efforts Advance Border Demarcation

Significant progress made in resolving border issues
On May 28-31, the Lao-Cambodian Joint Technical Sub-commissions on Border Demarcation, along with central and provincial authorities of Laos and Cambodia, conducted a survey of estimated locations for border markers 002 and 003 in Mounlapamok district and Chomkasane district, as well as markers 033-033/3, 031-031/1, and 032-032/6 in Khong District and Borei Ou Svay Senchey district of Champassak in Laos, and Stung Treng and Preah Vihear in Cambodia.

The Lao delegation was led by Mr. Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Lao-Cambodian Joint Technical Sub-Commission on Border Demarcation. The Cambodian delegation was headed by Mr. E Vuthy, Secretary of State of the State Secretariat of Border Affairs and Chairman of the Joint Technical Boundary Sub-Commission.

Following the joint border survey, both sides held a meeting to discuss the survey results and exchanged views on potential solutions to border demarcation issues. The participants noted that the amicable meeting marked significant progress in addressing border demarcation issues between the two countries.

In a symbolic gesture of cooperation, both sides participated in a border marker planting ceremony for Marker 034, signifying the beginning of border marker renovation using new techniques.

These activities reflect the commitment of the senior leaders of both countries, as well as the Lao-Cambodian agreement on border demarcation signed in February 2023, which urges both sides to find prompt solutions to border-related issues.
