In a recent biannual meeting of the National Internet Management Committee, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security, Gen. Vilay Lakhamfong, has issued a strong call to the Ministry of Technology and Communications to urgently address internet and cybercrimes in Laos.

During his guidance speech on June 25, Gen. Lakhamfong highlighted the pressing issues plaguing the digital space, including government document leaks, pornographic content, online gambling, illegal lotteries, prostitution, and drug trafficking. He emphasized the necessity for the Internet Management Committee to work more closely with various stakeholders to bolster the national cybersecurity infrastructure.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the importance of establishing a robust collaboration mechanism between governmental authorities and telecommunications and internet service providers. This partnership is aimed at ensuring swift and effective responses to cyber threats, thereby safeguarding user information and national security.

Furthermore, Gen. Lakhamfong called for the creation of a national cybersecurity strategy that would serve as a guiding framework for managing internet safety and security issues across the country. This strategy is intended to foster a safer online environment and contribute to Laos’s broader national protection and development goals.

The push for stronger cybersecurity measures comes at a critical time as Laos seeks to enhance its digital infrastructure and mitigate the risks associated with increasing internet use.
