Vientiane Undergoes Major Road Upgrades Ahead of ASEAN Meetings

Efforts Aim to Enhance Safety and Traffic Flow in the Lao Capital
In preparation for the upcoming ASEAN meetings, Vientiane is seeing significant road improvements to enhance driving conditions and safety. The Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department is leading 19 road improvement projects, with several already completed.

A newly asphalted 1.6-kilometer stretch between Sikhai and the Arkard traffic lights in Sikhottabong district is among the upgrades. Similar enhancements have been made to Sibounheuang Road and the road connecting Sokpaluang and the 23 Singha Park. Road crews are also laying concrete on routes including those between Wattay International Airport and Sikhai market, and from Nongviengkham to Nathom villages in Xaythany district.

The projects involve resurfacing eleven roads with asphalt and paving seven with concrete. New lane markings and traffic signs are also being installed, with approval from the mayor of Vientiane. Key routes receiving concrete include those from Wattay International Airport to Sikhai market, Khouvieng Road to the 103 Hospital, and from Thongkang to Sangveuy temples. Asphalt will cover roads between the Sidamduan, Thongsangnang, and Hongkaikeo traffic lights, among other locations.

These upgrades aim to facilitate smoother traffic flow, especially during rush hours, making driving in Vientiane easier and safer.

Despite ongoing efforts, poor road conditions remain a significant challenge in Laos. Social media users recently expressed outrage over the condition of a road near the National University of Laos in Vientiane, highlighting issues with motorists slipping on the slippery surface. Concerns were also raised about the quality of repair work conducted during the rainy season, which can lead to subpar results and difficulties for both road users and constructors.
