The Australian Government's donation of nine dialysis machines has significantly improved treatment accessibility for patients in Laos, particularly at Bolikhamxay Provincial Hospital. Dr. Sonephet Keoindavong, a specialist at the hospital, highlighted the previous challenges faced by patients who had to travel long distances for dialysis treatment.

The donation has allowed the hospital to increase the number of dialysis cycles from 1,684 in 2022 to over 2,500 in 2023, marking a 48 percent increase. This improvement has been life-changing for many patients, including Somchit, a 67-year-old resident of Mixay Village in Paksan District, who now receives bi-weekly dialysis treatments locally, saving both time and money.

Procured by WHO, these machines are aiding over 10,000 additional patients annually across various provinces, including Bokeo, Xayabouly, Bolikhamxay, Khammouan, Salavan, Champasak, and Xekong. They also ensure separate treatment for patients with COVID-19 or other infectious diseases, reducing the risk to other vulnerable patients.

Minister of Health, Dr. Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, expressed gratitude to the Australian Government, emphasizing that the donation enhances the quality of care and health outcomes. The donation is part of nearly 2 million US Dollars in support from the Australian Government to WHO Lao PDR, addressing COVID-19 prevention, treatment, vaccination, and other health issues.
