Laos to Combat Labor Shortage with Targeted Measures
Laos's Labour Minister Baikham Khattiya announced new initiatives to address a labor shortage. The measures include employer engagement, wage adjustments, labor meetings, and preventing illegal overseas work by supporting legal opportunities abroad. These efforts aim to improve job opportunities, fair wages, and economic growth in Laos.
During the seventh National Assembly meeting, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Baikham Khattiya, announced a series of measures to tackle Laos's labor shortage.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare is collaborating with the Lao Federation of Trade Unions, the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, and other organizations.
To address the labor shortage, the ministry is working closely with labor exporters and employers to improve engagement and consultations, adjust wages to current economic conditions, and uphold labor and social security laws.
The average wage for workers is currently LAK 2,700,000, though it should ideally be LAK 3,800,000.
Central labor meetings will be organized to bring together stakeholders to discuss labor needs.
The ministry also aims to prevent illegal working abroad by supporting legal employment opportunities and fostering new skills for returning workers.
