Strengthening Development: Laos and UNDP Review Progress and Set Priorities for 2024

Annual meeting in Vientiane focuses on strategic initiatives and collaboration for national growth.
The Ministry of Planning and Investment, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), convened on May 15 for their 2024 Annual Country Programme Review. The meeting, held in Vientiane and co-chaired by Minister of Planning and Investment Phonevanh Outhavong and UNDP Resident Representative to the Lao PDR Martine Thérer, aimed to assess and enhance the ongoing development efforts under the UNDP Country Programme for 2022-2026.

The session brought together key officials from the Lao government and the UNDP to evaluate the progress of current initiatives and discuss the strategic priorities for 2024. Topics included exploring innovative solutions, addressing potential risks, and capitalizing on opportunities to accelerate socio-economic development in line with Laos’ ninth five-year national development plan.

Minister Phonevanh Outhavong highlighted the significance of the Lao-UNDP cooperation, which is structured around three main outcomes: fostering universal prosperity, tackling environmental challenges and climate change adaptation, and enhancing governance and the rule of law. She expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the second year of the programme, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration and open dialogue to resolve any outstanding issues and meet the set objectives.

The meeting underscored the commitment of both Laos and the UNDP to a partnership that contributes robustly to the nation’s development goals, ensuring that planned projects under the cooperation framework effectively support Laos’ broader development agenda.
