Traditional silk tapestries from Xam Tai district in Houaphanh Province are set to be officially recognized as a One District One Product (ODOP), highlighting the region's rich cultural heritage and supporting local artisans. The announcement follows a meeting on January 15 between the Houaphanh provincial ODOP committee and Xam Tai district leaders to support the local silk weaving group under the initiative.
Xam Tai’s silk weaving, practiced by the Lao Loum and Tai Daeng ethnic groups, is deeply rooted in Buddhist and animist traditions. The intricate process involves raising silkworms, dyeing silk with natural materials, and weaving complex patterns that often feature symbolic motifs like Nagas, elephants, and ancestral spirits. These tapestries, valued for their spiritual significance, can take months to complete and are sold for between five million and fifty million Lao kip.
Local artisans hope this recognition will bring greater exposure to Lao silk weaving, helping it reach both domestic and international markets while preserving cultural identity.
