Laos’ Monsoon Wind Power Project to Begin Power Exports to Vietnam in 2025
The region's largest wind farm is set to deliver clean energy, boosting regional cooperation and local development.
Laos' 600MW Monsoon Wind Power Project, located in Xekong and Attapeu provinces, will connect to Vietnam’s electricity grid next month, with power exports scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025. This milestone marks a major step in regional energy collaboration under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Vietnam Electricity (EVN).
Power from the wind farm will be transmitted via a 71-kilometre transmission line, including 27 kilometres within Laos. The project aims to supply an initial 300MW of electricity to Vietnam by mid-2025, ramping up to its full capacity of 600MW by the third quarter. Future plans envision expanding production to 1,000MW, further enhancing Laos' role in renewable energy.
During a site visit to Dakcheung district, Xekong province, President Thongloun Sisoulith praised the project’s progress, urging operators to prioritise environmental protection and community support. He called for initiatives that integrate agricultural and livestock development, ensuring that the wind farm’s benefits extend to local residents and staff.
