Lao Youth Union Launches Sinxay Emergency Training to Combat Climate Disasters

New initiative equips young volunteers in Luang Namtha with disaster response skills
The Lao Youth Union (LYU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), the National University of Laos, Vientiane Rescue, and UNICEF Lao PDR, has launched the Sinxay Emergency Training program to strengthen youth capacity in disaster response.

This initiative trains 31 young volunteers from five high-risk districts in Luang Namtha, a province severely affected by Typhoon Yagi last year, impacting over 250,000 people nationwide. Volunteers will learn disaster preparedness, first aid, and mental health support skills and later engage more than 1,200 community members through outreach programs.

Mr. Nuanthong Suvanvixay, Deputy Secretary of LYU, emphasized the importance of empowering youth for climate resilience. UNICEF’s Simon Nazer highlighted the program’s role in preparing young leaders to support communities in crisis. This effort builds on previous youth-led initiatives like UPSHIFT and Youth Champions, with continued support from USAID and the Government of Australia.
