Thailand plans to cut off electricity, internet, and fuel supplies to five areas in Myanmar starting Wednesday morning as part of an effort to dismantle call-center scam operations that pose a serious national security threat.

This decision was made following a National Security Council meeting, where high-level officials reached a consensus that immediate action was required against criminal gangs operating in Myawaddy, Payathonzu, and Tachilek, territories along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Electricity service at five critical connection points will be disrupted, including the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridges in Myawaddy and Tachilek.

Myanmar authorities have been informed, and local communities have been alerted to prepare for service interruptions.

This initiative arises from escalating concerns regarding the expanding cyber scam operations, which particularly target Thai citizens.

These scams, typically orchestrated by Chinese fugitives who escaped domestic crackdowns, have adversely affected both Thai society and its international standing.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that scams have impacted over 500,000 Thai victims and resulted in a loss exceeding 60 billion baht since June 2022. The gangs are active in areas of Myanmar where the military regime has ceded control to rebel factions.

In connection with diplomatic efforts, the Prime Minister will travel to China to discuss issues related to cyber fraud and to assure Chinese tourists about their safety while in Thailand.
