Laos is utilizing satellite remote sensing technology to measure carbon stocks across nine forest areas totaling 170,556 hectares, aiming to secure carbon credit certification by late 2025. The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry during a Carbon Credit Feasibility Study Session on January 8, is a key step toward Laos' carbon neutrality goal by 2050 and supports the global “30×30” target to protect 30 percent of the planet by 2030.

The project is expected to generate significant revenue for biodiversity conservation, forest management, and community development. Satellite technology ensures accurate, transparent carbon accounting while reducing costs and preventing fraud. Plans are also underway to expand satellite monitoring to agriculture, promoting sustainable farming and increasing rural incomes.

This effort builds on Laos’ 2024 agreement with Carbon Registry Thailand and Carbon Credit Laos, introducing advanced satellite AI for carbon credit calculation. With nearly 16 million hectares of forest, Laos is well-positioned to expand its carbon credit market, reduce emissions, and support economic growth.
