China Criticizes US Tariffs, Vows Response Over Fentanyl Dispute

China denounces the US's new 10% tariff on imports, blaming America for the fentanyl crisis and promising countermeasures.
China's government has strongly criticized the Trump administration’s decision to impose a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, set to take effect on Tuesday, and vowed to challenge the move at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The Chinese finance and commerce ministries condemned the tariff as a violation of international trade rules while signaling that Beijing would take unspecified 'countermeasures' in response.

Despite this, the response stopped short of the aggressive escalation seen during the earlier phases of the US-China trade war under Trump’s first term, suggesting a more measured approach.

The US's tariff decision comes as President Trump cited the need for China to curb the flow of fentanyl, a potent opioid, into the United States.

Trump's order also included a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico.

In its statement, China’s commerce ministry urged the US to engage in 'frank dialogue and strengthen cooperation' on the matter.

Beijing has also expressed its intention to challenge the tariffs at the WTO, though such actions are typically symbolic and often have limited immediate impact.

China's foreign ministry took particular issue with the focus on fentanyl, asserting that it is a problem specific to the United States.

The ministry reiterated China’s commitment to anti-narcotics cooperation with the US, noting the progress made in the joint efforts to tackle the global opioid crisis.

However, Beijing maintains that the US should bear greater responsibility for addressing the issue domestically.

The dispute over fentanyl has been an ongoing point of tension in US-China relations.

While the Biden administration has urged China to curb shipments of the precursor chemicals used to produce fentanyl, the Chinese government has consistently argued that it has taken significant steps in curbing the drug's production and export.

This latest round of tariffs marks another chapter in the broader economic rivalry between the two nations, with global markets closely monitoring the potential ramifications on international trade.
