Enhancing Dengue Fever Awareness in Xaysomboun Province

Local Initiatives Aim to Curb the Spread of Dengue Through Education and Prevention
In an effort to combat the persistent threat of Dengue Fever in Laos, Phu Bia Mining Co. Ltd recently conducted educational sessions on 17th and 18th June for the communities of Nam Mo and Nam Gnone in Xaysomboun Province. These sessions, part of a broader public health initiative, provided crucial information on mosquito control and preventative practices to forty-three local participants.

The educational drive focused on practical measures such as the elimination of stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, the use of mosquito nets, and the introduction of mosquitofish in garden ponds to naturally reduce mosquito larvae. Such community-focused interventions are critical in regions like Xaysomboun, where the incidence of Dengue Fever remains high.

Despite a decrease in cases from the previous year, the region is still grappling with significant outbreaks, with over 4,400 cases and three fatalities reported across the country by 20th June this year. Sekong Province leads with the highest number of reported cases, followed by Vientiane Capital and Luang Prabang Province.

The onset of the monsoon season typically leads to a surge in Dengue cases due to increased mosquito breeding opportunities. Local health authorities, supported by international guidelines from the World Health Organization, continue to stress the importance of community engagement and preventive measures to tackle this ongoing public health challenge.

By fostering greater awareness and promoting proactive prevention strategies, Phu Bia Mining’s initiative not only addresses immediate health concerns but also contributes to the long-term well-being of the communities in Xaysomboun Province.
