Tens of Thousands Gather for That Luang Festival Almsgiving Ceremony

Laos’ largest religious celebration concludes with cultural and spiritual traditions
Tens of thousands of Buddhist devotees gathered this morning in Vientiane for the annual almsgiving ceremony honoring the That Luang Festival, Laos’ most significant religious event. Held in the courtyard of the That Luang stupa, the ceremony was attended by citizens from across the country, President Thongloun Sisoulith, high-ranking officials, and representatives from foreign embassies and NGOs.

Monks and worshippers offered alms, honored their ancestors, and prayed for departed spirits, underscoring the sacredness of the event. The That Luang Festival, held annually on the waxing moon of the 12th month in the Lao lunar calendar, concluded with traditional games and an evening candlelit procession around the stupa.

This cherished celebration highlights the deep cultural and spiritual significance of the That Luang stupa, a revered symbol of the Lao nation and unity.
