Efforts to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Laos Continue Through Health Services and Community Training
Expanding support systems and raising awareness across the country.
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains a significant issue in Laos, particularly in rural areas where support services are limited. In response, the Lao government and organizations like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are bolstering efforts to assist victims and promote mental health recovery through initiatives such as the Counseling and Protection Center for Women and Children and the Mother and Child Central Hospital.
The Counseling and Protection Center, established by the Lao Women’s Union in 2006, has assisted over 100 victims in the past year. Additionally, the Mother and Child Central Hospital has implemented procedures to identify and support GBV survivors. Community-based workshops, including recent training in Phialath village, aim to increase awareness and reduce domestic violence through education and family involvement.
On November 25, as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, UNFPA will participate in illuminating the Patuxay monument in orange, marking the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against GBV.
