The Ministry of Energy and Mines has suspended operations at a mining site in Khammouane province following two land collapses in Pak Beng Village, Thakhek District. The incidents, which occurred near a Chinese-operated mineral processing plant, raised significant safety and environmental concerns.

The first collapse on December 3 covered an area of 436 square meters and was six meters deep, prompting an immediate investigation. A second collapse, reported on December 21, measured 125 square meters with the same depth and was located just meters from the initial site.

Authorities have implemented safety measures, including installing monitoring systems, fencing off the affected areas, and warning locals to avoid the site. Investigations are ongoing, with results expected by the end of January.
