Nam Ngum 1 Reservoir Reopens as a Premier Eco-Tourism Destination

Sustainability, infrastructure upgrades, and community involvement drive renewed appeal
The Nam Ngum 1 Reservoir, also known as "Thalay Lao," has officially reopened in Vientiane Province’s Keooudom District after a three-year redevelopment. With expectations to attract one to two million visitors in 2025, the site promises a blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism practices.

The redevelopment includes a 6.3-kilometre concrete access road, improved internal pathways, and a modern marina featuring 36 boats connected to on-site restaurants. Visitors can also enjoy scenic viewing platforms and upgraded facilities. The relocation of 19 local families was carefully managed, with financial compensation and temporary housing provided throughout the redevelopment period.

Environmental sustainability remains a priority, with waste management systems and ongoing tree-planting initiatives in place. While some operational challenges persist, including incomplete boat upgrades and restricted island access, authorities aim to address these issues by mid-2025.

Local residents and business owners have responded positively to the reopening, with increased tourist activity boosting income for handicraft vendors and restaurant operators. Supported by a $5.33 million investment from the Asian Development Bank, the Nam Ngum 1 Reservoir is poised to become a key attraction, blending environmental responsibility with economic opportunity for the local community.
