Laos to Establish National Satellite Data Service and Management Center

New partnership aims to enhance satellite technology applications across multiple sectors
The Ministry of Technology and Communications in Laos has announced a significant partnership with Satellite Technology Co., Ltd to create a national satellite data service and management center. This agreement, signed last Friday in Vientiane by Mr. Vilaysone Buppharath, Head of the Technology and Innovation Department, and Mr. Xu Lin Lin, Director of Satellite Technology Co., Ltd, marks a crucial step in integrating and enhancing satellite technology use in Laos.

The center will focus on developing satellite data services that will serve both public and private sectors, aiming to improve the efficiency of public management and the quality of services. A key component of this initiative is the construction of a ground satellite station fully equipped with BeiDou technology in Vangvieng, Vientiane Province, and a service unit in Ban Don Tiu, Xaythany district.

The partnership also includes extensive plans for the development of human resources in space technology, and the provision of a range of services utilizing satellite data. These services will include map system services, mobile satellite services, natural disaster warnings, and applications in smart city management, land use, environmental protection, and mining exploration.

Additionally, the agreement outlines the establishment of specialized centers for remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), alongside weather monitoring stations.

This ambitious project not only aims to propel Laos into a new era of technological advancement but also ensures that the nation is better equipped to handle environmental monitoring, disaster response, and urban planning through improved satellite technology.
