Laos to Launch World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Coffee Roasting Plant
The innovative Green Hydrogen Valley Project aims to revolutionize coffee production in Laos using clean energy
A groundbreaking business venture is set to begin in Laos with the launch of a hydrogen-powered coffee roasting plant in Champasak Province by mid-2026. The project, led by Tokyo-based environmental firm TSB Greenex and supported by eight other companies, will use hydrogen derived from the country’s abundant hydropower resources. The 6 billion-yen ($41 million) initiative received partial funding from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
This facility will roast locally grown Arabica coffee beans at 200 degrees Celsius using clean hydrogen, producing 3,000 tonnes of coffee annually. By tapping into Laos’ vast hydropower capacity, the cost of hydrogen-roasted coffee is expected to be 10% to 20% cheaper than regular coffee, providing a unique selling point for environmentally conscious consumers.
