KOICA Grants USD 13 Million to Upgrade Bridges and Road Safety on Laos’ National Road No. 8
Project aims to enhance regional connectivity and road safety standards.
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has announced a grant of USD 13 million to upgrade six bridges and improve road safety on National Road No. 8, a key transport route connecting Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Korean Ambassador Jung Yung Soo emphasized the project as a symbol of growing Laos-Korea cooperation and revealed plans to elevate their relationship to a "Comprehensive Partnership" in 2025, marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
National Road No. 8, part of the Asian Highway 15, was constructed in the 1980s and serves as a critical trade and transport corridor. However, several aging bridges no longer meet international safety standards. The project will include upgrading six bridges, addressing accident-prone zones, installing road safety equipment, raising public awareness about highway safety, and providing training and essential tools to local authorities.
This initiative aims to modernize the infrastructure, reduce accidents, and strengthen Laos’ regional connectivity while fostering long-term cooperation between Laos and South Korea.
