Authorities in Laos’ Attapeu province have approved the use of 273 hectares of land for durian cultivation, marking a new phase in the country’s ambitions to become a durian supplier to China. According to The Vientiane Times, three local companies have received land concessions under a government initiative aimed at boosting commercial fruit production.

The majority of the land will be planted with durian trees, while existing forested areas will be preserved. The companies are required to secure investment licences and adhere to regulations on taxation and land use. In Laos, land remains state-owned, but long-term use rights can be granted through such concessions.

Durian farming in Laos has accelerated in recent years, largely fueled by Chinese investors eyeing future exports. Talks between Chinese business groups and Lao officials have led to proposals for establishing a national durian association, vocational training programs, and a research centre to support the sector’s growth and meet Chinese import requirements.
