Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, met with New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Winston Peters, in Vientiane during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting from July 24-28. Both leaders lauded the strong, six-decade-long friendship and cooperation between Laos and New Zealand, highlighting political collaboration and people-to-people exchanges that have fostered mutual understanding and trust.

During their meeting, they discussed and exchanged views on enhancing cooperation in several key areas, including education, unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance, tourism, trade, and investment. They also explored avenues for ASEAN-New Zealand cooperation and shared perspectives on regional and international issues of mutual interest. Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay expressed heartfelt gratitude for New Zealand’s support in Laos' socio-economic development, particularly in education, UXO clearance, and assistance for Laos' ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters appreciated the warm welcome and commended Laos for its effective hosting and chairing of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting. He wished Laos success in its role as ASEAN Chair in 2024, reaffirming New Zealand's commitment to continued partnership and support.
