Chinese Businessman Zhao Wei Honored for Contributions in Laos

Zhao Wei, founder of the Kings Romans Group and operator of the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Laos, was awarded a Third-Class Development Medal on December 6 by Luang Namtha Governor Viengsavath Siphandone. The honor, granted under a presidential decree, recognizes Zhao’s donation of LAK 1.3 billion (approximately USD 59,400) to support the Luang Prabang Provincial Police Command.
Zhao, who has previously received a Second-Class Medal of Bravery, expressed gratitude to Lao authorities and pledged continued support for sustainable development. However, his Golden Triangle operations, established under a 99-year concession, have faced allegations of involvement in illicit activities, including money laundering and human trafficking.
Lao and Chinese authorities have recently intensified efforts to combat criminal activities within the Zone, with large-scale operations leading to hundreds of arrests and ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal networks.
