Asia-Pacific Gen Z and Millennials Opt for Affordable Intra-Regional Travel: Marriott Survey

Younger Asian tourists are choosing intra-regional holidays due to rising travel costs.
According to Marriott International, over 60% of bookings in Asia-Pacific in 2023 were from regional travelers, compared to 40-50% pre-pandemic.

Gen Z and millennials, who make up a large portion of the adult population worldwide and will comprise over half of Asian travelers by 2025, are the primary drivers of this trend.

Marriott surveyed 1,000 Gen Z and millennial travelers in 10 Asian countries and found that they prefer saving money for trips.

Approximately 55% of travelers prefer destinations in the region for unique experiences, as they offer various options like beaches and mountains, saving travel time and costs compared to long-haul flights to Europe.

Gen Z and millennials, despite having lower budgets, have a strong travel desire and aim to get the most value for their money.

Around 73% of respondents plan for at least two trips within a year, and 91% intend to spend the same or more than before.

The text discusses travel trends based on a survey of respondents.

A significant number of people are willing to cut back on dining out and shopping to afford travel.

Around 80% of respondents want hotels to offer local programs and experiences, and 84% prefer hotels that reflect the destination.

According to Mr. Toomey, this trend indicates that people are prioritizing experiences over material goods.
