Vietnam has overhauled its national power strategy in preparation for its targeted double-digit economic growth from 2026 to 2030. The new plan increases total power capacity to 236 gigawatts by 2030—up from the previous 150 GW—with renewable sources contributing one-third of the total, according to the *Business Times*.

Electricity imports will rise to as much as 12 GW, with Laos playing a central role in supplying hydropower. China will also be added as a new source. Meanwhile, power exports will drop to just 400 megawatts by 2030, destined solely for Cambodia, before increasing to 10 GW by 2035 to serve partners like Singapore and Malaysia.

Plans to relaunch nuclear power have been set for between 2030 and 2035, while offshore wind development has been pushed to 2035 due to industry delays. Onshore and nearshore wind will help bridge the gap. From July 2024, large electricity consumers can directly purchase power from renewable producers. However, delays affecting 170 solar and wind projects worth 13 billion US dollars could jeopardize Vietnam's clean energy transition.
