Vientiane Capital, in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), hosted a workshop to present the city’s Green City Action Plan (GCAP) for 2023–2030. The event underscored the city’s commitment to becoming a greener, more sustainable urban space by 2030, with a focus on specific action points to meet its sustainability goals.

The GCAP aims to tackle several challenges arising from rapid urban growth, including rising waste levels, increased traffic congestion, and pollution. Dr. Bouavone Souklaseng, Director General of the Department of Planning and Investment, emphasized the importance of strategic urban planning to transform Vientiane into an eco-friendly city. "The plan outlines how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve waste management, and protect biodiversity, while ensuring sustainable economic growth and improved quality of life for residents," Dr. Souklaseng explained.

The workshop also highlighted the alignment of the GCAP with national policies, such as the 9th Socio-Economic Development Plan and Lao PDR’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, positioning the city as a leader in climate action and sustainable development. The workshop was attended by key stakeholders, including government representatives and experts from KOICA and GGGI, with approximately 50 participants engaging in discussions about the future of Vientiane’s green transformation.
