UNDP and Lao Government Collaborate to Tackle Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation
High-Level Delegation Visits Savannakhet and Champassak to Promote Environmental Initiatives
From July 23-26, 2024, UNDP Resident Representative in Lao PDR, Ms. Martine Thérer, and Vice-Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr. Chanthanet Boualapha, led a joint field visit to Savannakhet and Champassak. This visit highlighted their joint efforts in combating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and enhancing community resilience against extreme weather events like floods and droughts.
The delegation included high-level officials from various ministries and provincial authorities, who visited significant conservation sites such as the Eld’s Deer Ecotourism Centre and the crocodile conservation initiative in Savannakhet. In Champassak, they engaged with local authorities and communities benefiting from UNDP support in sustainable water management and disaster preparedness.
During the visit, a youth workshop in Savannakhet encouraged students to propose innovative solutions to environmental challenges. Ms. Thérer emphasized the urgency of climate action, while Mr. Boualapha highlighted the importance of intergenerational collaboration. The mission underscored the need for ongoing partnerships to address environmental issues and support sustainable community livelihoods.
