The United Nations has issued an urgent call to action on extreme heat, urging global efforts to address record-breaking temperatures. UN Secretary-General António Guterres presented the plan, highlighting the severe implications for human life, economies, and societies.

In early June, Guterres described the rising temperatures as a "highway to climate hell" after Copernicus, the European Union’s climate monitoring service, confirmed 12 consecutive months of unprecedented heat. He criticized fossil fuel companies, labeling them as "godfathers of climate chaos," and called for a global ban on advertising fossil fuel products.

Copernicus data reveals that every month since July 2023 has been at least 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial levels. The global average temperature over the past 12 months was 1.63 degrees Celsius above these levels, a significant deviation from the 2015 Paris Agreement's goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. Experts and the UN view this as a critical and alarming sign that immediate and robust action is needed to combat climate change.
