Posts on popular pages such as *Tholakhong* and *Lao Phatthana* highlighted large collections of plastic bags, bottles, and waste accumulating along roads and footpaths, sparking public outrage. Many social media users pointed to the lack of adequate waste management services in Laos, with some blaming the authorities for not providing enough garbage trucks.

Local residents like Phoumpanya “Uro” Douangpaseuth and Thippapha “Jenny” Xayavong voiced their frustrations over the widespread plastic pollution in their neighborhoods. While businesses and organizations are beginning to promote eco-friendly practices, such as using paper bottles in events, the lack of viable alternatives and effective waste management systems remains a significant hurdle. Both Uro and Jenny emphasized the importance of better education on plastic waste and increased access to reusable products to reduce plastic consumption.

Experts, including Serge Doussantousse from Green Vientiane, are calling on manufacturers to take responsibility for the plastic waste they create. He believes that companies should contribute to improving waste management systems and educate consumers about the environmental impact of plastic. The World Bank’s 2022 report also highlighted the severe environmental consequences of plastic pollution, with the hospitality and tourism sectors being major contributors. As global efforts to address plastic waste, like the Global Plastic Treaty, take shape, experts remain cautious about the timeline for meaningful change.
