The mayor of Vang Vieng, Bounchan Malavong, has promised justice for the six foreign tourists who tragically died after consuming drinks suspected of being contaminated with methanol in the Lao tourist town. The incident occurred on November 12, with the victims—including two young Australian women, a British woman, two Danish women, and an American man—succumbing to the effects of the poisonous substance. Around a dozen others were reported to have fallen ill. In response, authorities have launched an investigation and have begun inspecting local restaurants and entertainment venues to ensure safety standards are upheld and protect tourists in the future.

The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its condolences and pledged to investigate the incident thoroughly. While the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, Thai medical experts indicated that methanol poisoning was likely responsible. The mayor acknowledged that the incident had harmed the image of tourism in Vang Vieng and Laos but reassured the public that tourism remains strong. The Nana Backpackers Hostel, where some of the victims stayed, has been temporarily closed, and the Vietnamese manager has been detained for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

Several foreign governments, including Australia, the UK, New Zealand, and the US, have updated their travel advisories, warning of the risks of methanol poisoning in Laos. Methanol, a toxic substance often found in homemade or counterfeit alcoholic beverages, has been linked to numerous poisonings worldwide. The Laos government has committed to holding those responsible accountable and ensuring such incidents do not repeat.
