A government document from Laos, obtained by ABC News Australia, suggests that a factory near the capital Vientiane is the source of a methanol poisoning outbreak that led to the deaths of six tourists. The Ministry of Health’s Department of Food and Drugs identified contamination risks in products produced by the factory, particularly Tiger Vodka and Tiger Whisky, prompting a ban on the sale and consumption of these products. The factory has been ordered to close until it meets health and safety standards.

Following the deaths, the Australian government issued a warning advising travelers to avoid consuming Tiger Vodka and Tiger Whisky, citing serious safety concerns. ABC News Australia visited the factory, where locals reported that it was shut down after visits from health inspectors and police. Remnants of a fire and Tiger product packaging were found outside. The factory owner has since been arrested. Authorities are also investigating other potential sources of the poisoning, including foreign nationals working at a local hostel. The case is ongoing, with arrests made but no charges filed yet.
