Laos-China Railway Marks Two Years of Cross-Border Success
Nearly half a million international passengers and a major boost to regional trade and tourism
The Laos-China Railway has celebrated the second anniversary of its cross-border operations, having transported 480,000 passengers from 112 countries since launching services on 13 April 2023. The railway has become a vital link between Laos and China, connecting key destinations such as Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Kunming.
Since the start of 2025, the railway has reached record activity, moving 4 million tons of cargo—including fruit exports—and handling 4.1 million passenger trips. The success highlights its growing role in tourism and trade across the region. To commemorate the anniversary and Lao New Year 2025, onboard celebrations featured traditional Lao music and dance, welcoming both local and international travelers.
Since opening in 2021, the 409-kilometer railway has transported over 48.6 million passengers and 54 million tons of goods. Enhanced services and international connections, including the Lancang-Mekong Express, have turned it into a regional transport powerhouse. Plans are underway to expand capacity with a fifth electric train to meet rising demand.
