Laos and Korea Co-Host 12th Mekong-Korea Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Focus on Economic Recovery and Future Cooperation
On July 26, 2024, the Lao PDR and the Republic of Korea co-hosted the 12th Mekong-Korea Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Vientiane. Held in conjunction with the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, this event was chaired by Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, and Mr. CHO Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. Foreign ministers and senior officials from Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam also participated.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the Mekong-Korea cooperation framework and reported on achievements from the Plan of Action 2021-2025, covering seven areas of cooperation: culture and tourism, human resource development, agriculture and rural development, infrastructure, technology and communication, environment, and non-traditional security challenges. Through the Mekong-Republic of Korea Cooperation Fund (MKCF), seven projects worth over $2.7 million have been implemented in the Lao PDR. In 2024, Korea provided over $400,000 to promote soybean production and develop soybean processing technology in Laos and Vietnam.

Future cooperation plans focused on economic recovery in the Mekong region, particularly the 12th Mekong-Korea Business Forum in August 2024 and the next Mekong-Korea Foreign Ministers' Meeting. Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith expressed gratitude to Korea for its contributions to the Mekong region's socio-economic development and proposed continued support and strengthened cooperation.
