Laos and Japan are set to deepen their economic ties, following discussions between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on October 11. The leaders agreed to collaborate on key initiatives, including clean energy projects, infrastructure development, and disaster prevention efforts. Japan has pledged support for Laos’s green energy transition, aiming to help the country achieve its zero-carbon emissions goal by expanding electricity connections with neighboring nations and jointly constructing electric grids.

In addition to energy, Japan will assist in upgrading Wattay International Airport to improve connectivity and promote trade and tourism in the region. The partnership also extends to clearing unexploded ordnance (UXO) and enhancing disaster resilience, ensuring safer conditions for future development.

This meeting marked PM Ishiba’s first international trip since assuming office, reflecting Japan’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Laos.
