In response to an invitation from Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos, Mrs. Kamikawa Yoko, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, paid an official visit to Laos to participate in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting from July 25-27. The visit aimed to bolster the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.

On July 26, a bilateral meeting was held between the Lao and Japanese foreign ministers at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both sides reviewed their longstanding cooperation and appreciated the expanding friendship between Laos and Japan. They noted the high-level exchanges and successful bilateral projects, expressing readiness to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of their strategic partnership next year. The Lao side also welcomed the upcoming visit of Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio for the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane in October 2024.

The discussions focused on future plans, with both sides agreeing to continue promoting cooperation in various sectors, including economic-trade, investment, education, human resource development, culture, and tourism. The Lao side expressed gratitude for Japan's ongoing support, particularly in infrastructure development, UXO clearance, and ASEAN chairmanship support. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership and enhancing regional cooperation within the Japan-ASEAN framework.
