Lao Foreign Minister's Official Visit to China Strengthens Bilateral Relations

High-level talks focus on sustainable cooperation, economic growth, and regional security
From March 12 to 15, 2025, Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane paid an official visit to China at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The visit aimed to further strengthen the long-standing friendship and strategic partnership between Laos and China. Both sides committed to advancing high-quality cooperation, particularly through the "Master Plan on Building a Laos-China and China-Laos Community with a Shared Future (2024-2028)."

During bilateral talks in Beijing on March 13, both ministers discussed the progress made in various sectors, especially in economic cooperation and infrastructure development. The Lao-China Railway was highlighted as a transformative project, boosting trade, investment, and travel between the two nations. Future cooperation will focus on emerging sectors and the further development of projects surrounding the railway. The two ministers also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on global security cooperation, reinforcing their shared commitment to peace and stability.

Minister Thongsavanh also expressed gratitude for China's support during Laos’ ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024. He extended an invitation for Wang Yi to visit Laos, which was accepted. During his visit, Thongsavanh toured Chinese institutions, underscoring Laos’ interest in technological innovation and cutting-edge advancements.
