At the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Vientiane, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, reaffirming the strong, long-standing relationship between the two nations. Over the past five decades, Laos and Malaysia have developed close ties in trade, investment, and diplomacy, with Malaysia ranking as the fifth-largest foreign investor in Laos, contributing USD 942 million across 46 projects in sectors such as energy, banking, and construction.

The leaders discussed future collaboration, particularly in advancing the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, which aims to enhance energy connectivity across the region. Prime Minister Sonexay also thanked Malaysia for its support of Laos' ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024 and pledged to support Malaysia's Chairmanship in 2025.

Prime Minister Anwar expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to continued cooperation with Laos.
