Japan Hosts Reception for Lao Scholarship Recipients
Celebrating Academic Excellence and Strengthening Bilateral Ties
A reception for scholars and senior fellows of the “Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship by Japanese Grant Aid (JDS)” and the “Young Leaders Programme (YLP)” was held at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan in Vientiane on August 1. This event aimed to congratulate and encourage Lao government officials selected to study in Japan under these prestigious programs.
The JDS grants scholarships for two-year master’s degrees and three-year doctoral degrees to Lao officials involved in socio-economic development. Since its inception in 1999, over 500 officials have benefited from the program. Meanwhile, the YLP, started in 2001, provides one-year scholarships for junior government officials to study for a master’s degree in fields such as government, business administration, law, and healthcare administration. Approximately 70 Lao officials have participated in the YLP.
During the reception, Ambassador Koizumi congratulated the students and highlighted the importance of the Lao PDR’s role as the ASEAN chair and the upcoming 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Laos. He encouraged the students to share their experiences in Japan with the Lao people and use their acquired knowledge to strengthen the partnership between the two countries. Prominent Lao officials, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phout Simmalavong, Minister of Education and Sports, and Dr. Bounfeng Phounmmalaysith, Minister of Health, also attended the event to support the departing scholars.
