Forum Promotes Sustainable Irrigation and Renewable Energy in Laos

Focus on solar power in irrigation highlights collaboration between Laos and ADB.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s Irrigation Department, in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), held the second Stakeholder Forum for the Sub-Sector Working Group on Irrigation in Vientiane on October 14, 2024. The forum, co-chaired by government and ADB officials, emphasized the importance of cooperation in the irrigation sector for sustainable socio-economic development. One of the main discussions focused on integrating solar power for groundwater irrigation to help reduce electricity costs for farmers, particularly during dry seasons.

ADB’s Principal Specialist, Mr. Omer Zafar, highlighted the organization’s commitment to supporting solar-powered irrigation systems, which would boost agricultural productivity and enhance climate resilience. The use of renewable energy, such as solar power, is a priority for Laos’ 2021-2025 irrigation plans, aiming to increase food production and water availability in rural areas. This aligns with Laos’ broader goal of promoting sustainable agricultural development.

Forum participants agreed on the need for further investment in renewable energy for irrigation projects, with ADB continuing to provide technical assistance through partnerships with the International Water Management Institute. This collaboration is set to improve the livelihoods of local farmers and support long-term agricultural growth in the country.
