Farmers in Luang Prabang province are growing coffee for export to Japan under the Cocreation of Food Security for Farmers with Economic Empowerment with Japan (COFFEE-JAPAN) project. Launched in February, the initiative has significantly impacted local communities, promoting sustainable agriculture and better nutrition, according to the World Food Programme.

The project, funded by the Japanese government, involves the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the United Nations World Food Programme, Japanese company Saka no Tochu, and Lao fair-trade company Saffron Coffee. It spans eight villages in Phonxay and Viengkham districts over 30 months, aiming to enhance coffee production and export, particularly for Japanese small- and medium-scale coffee roasters.

Farmers have adopted new agricultural practices, learned about nutrition, and embraced a healthier lifestyle. The initiative provides training and infrastructure, supporting rural incomes and food security. Through COFFEE-JAPAN, Luang Prabang farmers are not only improving their livelihoods but also preserving forested land, leading to a brighter future for their communities.
