Once abundant in Laos, Asian elephant numbers have dwindled due to habitat loss, poaching, and labor-intensive industries. With only between 500 and 1,000 elephants left, conservationists are using DNA analysis from dung samples to track populations and create a sustainable breeding plan.

At the Elephant Conservation Center in Sayabouly, rescued elephants receive care, while researchers collect genetic data to manage inbreeding and improve herd health. Wild elephant DNA is also being studied in Nam Poui National Protected Area to better understand movement and relationships within herds.

With numbers continuing to decline, conservationists warn that without intervention, Laos’ elephants could disappear within decades. DNA tracking offers a critical step in ensuring the survival of this iconic species.
