Cambodia Considers Implementing "Drug Free School Project" Inspired by Laos
Initiative Aims to Enhance Drug Education in Schools
Cambodia is evaluating the "Drug Free School Project," successfully implemented in Laos, to improve drug education and awareness efforts within its schools. Lim Tong Huot, director of the Education and Public Relations Department of the National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD), and Suphaphat Hib Orsot, advisor at the Thai Embassy in Cambodia, held a meeting on August 2 to discuss this initiative.
During the meeting, the Thai side introduced the project, which has been executed in Laos through the Thai International Cooperation Agency (TICA). Tong Huot expressed interest in adapting the project to suit Cambodia's specific needs. The meeting, chaired by Phana Veunida, deputy secretary-general of the Cambodian Development Cooperation Board (CDCB), received support for prompt preparation to include the initiative in TICA's mid-term meeting in September.
The project will be tailored for Cambodia, drawing from Laos' successful implementation. Tong Huot emphasized the importance of educating students about the dangers of drugs, noting that informed students can disseminate knowledge within their families. This comprehensive approach aims to bolster efforts to combat drug trafficking and reduce governmental concerns.
The fight against drugs requires collaborative efforts across multiple sectors and nations, Tong Huot stressed. In the first half of 2024, Cambodia's drug education initiatives reached approximately 16 million people, with 1,031 arrests made in July alone for drug-related offenses.
