Vietnam PM Urges ASEAN Unity on East Sea Disputes

Leaders stress peaceful solutions and international law at ASEAN Summits
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called for ASEAN members to strengthen their unity in resolving East Sea territorial disputes through peaceful means, emphasizing the importance of international law, particularly the 1982 UNCLOS. At the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Laos, Chinh highlighted the critical need to ensure security, safety, and freedom of navigation in the East Sea, which handles 60 percent of global trade.

Chinh also stressed the importance of ASEAN capitalizing on growth opportunities in digital transformation, green development, and climate change. He emphasized that proactive cooperation among member nations is essential for tackling these emerging challenges.

On the Myanmar issue, Chinh endorsed the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus as a guiding framework but acknowledged the need for new approaches to achieve peace in the country. He called for dialogues and negotiations to prevent civilian harm and address security risks affecting the region.
