ASEAN to Hold Informal Talks on Myanmar Crisis
Upcoming Discussions in Bangkok Aim to Advance ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus
Vientiane: Laos' ASEAN Department director-general, Chatoulong Bouasisavath, announced that the upcoming informal consultation on the Myanmar crisis in Bangkok this month aims to advance the ASEAN five-point consensus.
This consensus calls for an immediate end to violence in Myanmar, dialogue among all parties, the appointment of a special envoy, humanitarian assistance, and a special envoy's visit to Myanmar.
The discussions, including past and present ASEAN chairs—Indonesia, Laos, and next year's chair Malaysia—will evaluate the consensus's implementation since its adoption last year under Indonesia's chairmanship.
The meeting will be open to other interested ASEAN members.
While Laos, the current ASEAN chair, has overseen progress such as a meeting in July between consecutive chairs, it remains committed to facilitating a 'Myanmar-led, Myanmar-owned' solution by including a non-political representative from Myanmar in ASEAN summits.
The talks are scheduled for December 20 in Bangkok, with considerations for ongoing international legal actions against Myanmar's military leader Min Aung Hlaing.
