American Airlines aircraft aborts take‑off at Denver; 179 people evacuated via slides after reported mechanical failure

Smoke and fire were observed near the rear of the aircraft; five people were assessed on site and one was taken to hospital. The FAA has opened an investigation.

An American Airlines flight aborted take‑off at Denver International Airport on Saturday following a reported mechanical failure, triggering a full emergency evacuation via slides. According to the airline, all one hundred seventy-three passengers and six crew members exited the aircraft safely. The aircraft was transferred to the carrier’s maintenance team for inspection.

Evacuation and injuries

Airport authorities reported that five people were evaluated on site for possible injuries and one person was transported to hospital. Passengers were subsequently bussed back to the terminal.

Smoke and fire reported

Video circulated on social media showed passengers evacuating quickly down slides as smoke enveloped the aircraft and flames were visible at the rear. Footage also showed one passenger falling near the end of a slide before standing up and moving away, and another evacuating while holding a small child and luggage.

Passenger account

A passenger identified as Tzourakis said the incident occurred seconds before the aircraft was due to lift off, describing a “loud boom” during the take‑off roll. He said the pilots immediately decelerated to a complete stop and, about a minute later, passengers noticed smoke and the evacuation began shortly after.

Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it has opened an investigation into the incident.

Aftermath

The airline stated that the aircraft experienced a mechanical issue during the take‑off acceleration, and confirmed that all occupants disembarked safely via emergency slides before being transported to the terminal.
