Anoukit ‘Mon’ Kithsavath: From Childhood Inspiration to Global Recognition

Lao photographer Mon Kithsavath’s street photography earns international acclaim and sets his sights on new creative milestones.
Anoukit 'Mon' Kithsavath, a 28-year-old Lao photographer, credits his father as his first inspiration. Watching his father, a passionate photographer, sparked Mon’s own love for visual storytelling. As a child, Mon was captivated by the way his father used his camera not just to take photos but to capture emotions and moments that could otherwise be lost. This deep connection to photography guided him towards a career that would soon garner international recognition.

In February 2025, Mon was honored with a Highly Commended Award at the Photography Foundation Awards in London. Though not the top prize, this recognition has propelled Mon onto the global stage, marking a significant achievement in his journey. Known for his street photography, Mon has focused on capturing the dynamic interplay between cityscapes, people, and art, often finding beauty in the transient, raw nature of street art. Mon’s style is influenced by legendary photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, admired for his precision in capturing fleeting moments, and Alan Schaller, whose creative black-and-white photography deeply impacts Mon’s work.

Despite the rewards, Mon’s journey hasn’t been without its struggles. He described how the unpredictability of street photography can lead to frustration, especially on days when his shots didn’t turn out as envisioned. However, Mon's love for the craft has driven him to push through these obstacles. The recent award was a reminder of his dedication and hard work, motivating him to strive for even greater accomplishments, including his first photo book and a future exhibition.

Mon’s advice for aspiring photographers is simple yet profound: start with the basics, embrace challenges, and never stop practicing. He encourages new photographers to experiment with various techniques, seek feedback, and continually improve. His journey proves that perseverance, passion, and dedication can lead to great success, even when the path is unpredictable.
