Streamlining Passport Services: Laos Introduces New Fee Structure and Express Options

Consular Department Implements Changes to Enhance Passport Issuance Process
In a move to simplify passport procedures and enhance service provision, the Consular Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Laos has announced adjustments to fees and service charges for passport issuance.

Effective from March 4, the revised ordinance introduces a fee structure where electronic passports will cost USD 60 per book, and non-electronic passports will be priced at USD 40 per book. These fees, though denominated in USD, will be collected in the local currency, based on the exchange rate determined by the Ministry of Finance.

The amendment also brings forth an express passport service offering three processing options: 1-day, 3-day, and 5-day, priced at LAK 1 million, LAK 500,000, and LAK 300,000 per book, respectively. This expedited service aims to cater to individuals in urgent need of passports, ensuring a timely process.

The Consular Department emphasizes the importance of securing sufficient funding for passport operations, covering various expenses such as payments, IT equipment procurement, and technical system maintenance.

Furthermore, the introduction of the express passport service seeks to address concerns raised by residents regarding long waiting times and system errors in the passport acquisition process. By implementing a systematic, transparent, and verifiable process, the department aims to streamline operations and generate additional income for the state budget.

Residents, employees, and officials from all sectors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the revised fees and services, as the Consular Department strives to improve the overall passport issuance experience for all individuals.
