Vietnam Unveils Plans for High-Speed Rail Links with China

Ambitious Projects Aim to Modernize Transport Infrastructure and Boost Connectivity
Vietnam has announced ambitious plans to embark on two high-speed rail projects connecting it with China by 2030, marking a significant step toward modernizing its transport network and enhancing connectivity with its northern neighbor.

One line will extend from northeastern Haiphong and Quang Ninh to the border with China’s Yunnan province, while the other will run from Hanoi to near Guangxi in southern China. These projects are part of the broader north-south high-speed rail route, which includes the proposed 1,500 km line connecting Hanoi with Ho Chi Minh City, with work expected to commence by 2030.

Vietnam aims to learn from China's expertise in developing high-speed rail networks, as demonstrated by recent collaboration between Vietnamese officials and Chinese railway companies. With China being Vietnam’s largest trading partner, enhanced connectivity through these projects is expected to further bolster bilateral trade, which surged 22% in the first quarter of 2024.

The planned high-speed rail links build upon existing transportation infrastructure between the two countries, complementing a network of highways and historical railway lines. While these projects signify significant progress, they are part of China's broader regional ambitions, with high-speed rail projects underway or proposed in Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
